Even as a beauty professional, it can be hard to stay in the loop—especially since it moves at lightning speed. If you aim to stay current on all of the aesthetic procedures trending, you may have come across a new treatment called SmoothGlo being touted by notable individuals like Kyle Richards, Jade Tolbert, and Colton Underwood.

But what is it, what kind of results does it deliver, and is it something you should offer to your clients? I decided to tap into one of the first doctors in the United States to offer the treatment in his multi-location practice.

What Is SmoothGlo?

SmoothGlo is a nonsurgical treatment that addresses the three most visible signs of aging including texture, tone, and volume, and is manufactured by Lumenis, Ltd., the world's largest energy-based medical device company for aesthetic, surgical, and ophthalmic applications. SmoothGlo incorporates two clinically proven technologies delivered sequentially to deliver both immediate and cumulative results with minimal discomfort and downtime. The impressive results SmoothGlo delivers are achieved by leveraging Lumenis’s Stellar M22™ IPL and Legend Pro™ VoluDerm™ technologies, two technologies long considered by the industry to be best-in-class.

Neither IPL nor microneedling are new technologies. But SmoothGlo’s "magic" is in the sequence of the treatment. The first portion of it is with the StellarM22™ IPL, which removes both brown and red lesions improving overall tone while increasing the water content in the skin. It’s the increase in the skin’s water content that amplifies the clinical effects of the second part of the treatment with the Legend Pro™ VoluDerm™ RF microneedling, which exposes the elevated moisture in the skin to an electrical charge that improves the texture, contour, and volume of the skin.

An Expert Opinion On SmoothGlo

Dr. Michael Mirmanesh, a celebrated plastic surgeon renowned for his mastery of plastic surgery's most advanced techniques, was an early adopter of SmoothGlo and brought it into all his Garden Med Spa locations. "I have performed over 400 SmoothGlo treatments personally. Our multi-location medical spa, The Garden Medical Spa, with locations in Florida, New Jersey, and South Carolina has performed over 2,500 since the SmoothGlo launch in 2021. We are proud to be the first practice in the USA to offer SmoothGlo."

Mirmanesh tells me he favors this device simply because of the results it delivers. "I know we like to say this a lot in aesthetics, but SmoothGlo has and continues to be a gamechanger. The ability to deliver CO2 like results without downtime (often without any downtime as clients are advised they may wear makeup the next day) is the holy grail of laser and light therapy facial rejuvenation. The ability to significantly improve tone and texture, along with tightening in only one treatment sounds too good to be true, but I like to say the proof is in the pudding." SmoothGlo is compatible with Fitzpatrick skin tones 1 through 4. "There is a variation of SmoothGlo using a nanosecond or picosecond laser for Fitzpatrick 5 skin types," continues Mirmanesh."

"Some treatments sell themselves and SmoothGlo is one of them. Patients request IPL treatments every day," continues Mirmanesh. "They are looking for a great result and expectations can be higher than what the technology can deliver. SmoothGlo is the answer to that problem by giving patients the outcomes they want and requires very little downtime to get there. Patients love their results and feel like they got more than their money’s worth, which is exactly what good providers want their patients to say."

When it comes to results, Mirmanesh explains to his clients that the proverbial needle for achieving more youthful, smooth skin is moved in just one treatment significantly. "However, additional treatments will continue to move the needle farther in achieving the client’s skin goals with additional treatments. Once a client reaches their ‘steady state’ they can expect to have one treatment a year to maintain their result."

To educate beauty professionals, Dr. Mirmanesh has recently begun advanced training in aesthetics and specifically on Lumines technologies. "Our in-house protocols at The Garden Medical Spa have allowed us to consistently reach this clinical end goal for clients and we want all of the SmoothGlo nation to share in the success of this great technology," Mirmanesh excitedly explains. "Treating Fitzpatrick 3’s and 4’s safely and effectively is a big part of the advanced training. I’ve teamed up with Dr. Shauna Diggs MD, a world-renowned dermatologist, and skin of color expert in offering this advanced training."

Takeaway

Consumer demand has increased for treatments that address multiple skin concerns in one treatment. If you have been searching for a new technology to retain and attract new clients to your beauty business to grow your bottom line, SmoothGlo offers a highly effective treatment that addresses the three main complaints about aging skin including texture, tone, and volume with little to no downtime. Clients can visibly see results after one treatment and continue to improve until they reach their "steady state" at which point yearly treatments are needed to maintain the results.
